Historical Society of Baltimore County presents

Mingle at the Mill 2

Thursday, August 31, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm

A fundraiser for HSBC - $60/ticket

Our last visit to Manor Mill was such a hit last fall that we are really excited to share this unique venue with all of you again!

An evening of fun, art, and history while raising funds for HSBC! There will be tours of the renovated historic Manor Mill, artwork for sale, live music, and great food. The Manor Mill museum store will be open with work from their artisans and books from HSBC; plenty of items that make wonderful, distinctive gifts.

Much literature on the Civil War revolves around its battles. While military action is vital to understanding that conflict, its impact on civilians is often understudied. Join award-winning author and historian Charles W. Mitchell for an enlightening discussion on the experiences of the Civil War on ordinary Marylanders. How did farmers, women, merchants, enslaved persons, children, clergymen and others cope with the challenges of this war? How did family members with opposing views, passionately held, discuss issues such as secession, civil liberties and the institution of slavery? Mitchell will convey their experiences through their own words--their letters, diaries and other writings--that illuminate how they struggled to protect their homes, businesses and loved ones.

Mitchell is author or editor of three books. This discussion will flow from his prize-winning book, "Maryland Voices of the Civil War," published by Johns Hopkins University Press. That and his two other books will be available following his presentation, with all proceeds going to the Baltimore County Historical Society.
