Who's Going to Take Care of the Children?

The Battle for Child Care During World War II

with Teri Dorsey Rising

Sunday, August 23, from 2 to 3:30 pm

As American women prepared to go into war industries, taking the place of men who were called to work, the question of who would take care of the children while mothers worked challenged racial and gender stereotypes and also provided opportunities to test new approaches to work and child care.

Teri Dorsey Rising is an independent architectural historian and works for the Maryland Department of Emergency Management as an Environmental/Historic Preservation Compliance Specialist. She was the County Historian for the Baltimore County Department of Planning for over 13 years and served as staff to the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Prior to her work with the County, Teri was an Information Specialist with the Baltimore County Public Library and worked for the National Park Service at both Fort McHenry National Monument & Historic Shrine and Hampton National Historic Site. She also served on the boards of the Historical Society of Baltimore County, Historic Towson Inc., and the Granite Historical Society. Teri is a graduate of the Maryvale Preparatory School, is a Certified Climate Change Professional (CC-P), and holds a degree in Historic Preservation from Goucher College.
