Native Dancer - Hall of Fame Horse

Larry Smith, Joe Davies, and Michael Finney

Wednesday, May 14 at 5:00 pm

(The 7:30 time in cancelled. Those tickets are valid at 5pm.)

As we look forward to the running of the 150th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico, join us to hear the story of Native Dancer (March 27, 1950 November 16, 1967), winner of the 1953 Preakness Stakes and the 1953 Belmont Stakes. Native Dancer was raised at Alfred G. Vanderbilt Jr.'s Sagamore Farm in Glyndon, Maryland, and is generally considered a Maryland-bred, racing thoroughbred horse. He was a champion in each of his three years of racing, and was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1963.

Our panel members are Larry Smith, Joe Davies, and Michael Finney, three gentlemen with a long history in horse breeding, training, and racing. A lifelong Marylander, Larry Smith currently owns, trains & breeds thoroughbred racehorses with his wife Connie at their farm in Westminster. Larry currently sits on the Racing Committee of the Maryland State Fair and serves as the Vice President of the Steeplechase Owners & Trainers Association. Joe Davies is an active Maryland  steeplechase trainer and former amateur  jockey. His family owned Laurel racecourse during his childhood which gave him a unique perspective on Thoroughbred racing when it was still the number one spectator sport in the country. Michael Finney is a Maryland Racing Historian and steeplechase announcer at My Lady's Manor and other races throughout the east coast.
