Electricity Comes to Baltimore: Changing Lives and Lifestyles

Sunday, July 14, from 2 to 3:30 pm

Jack Burkert

Modern Baltimore arrived when delivering power through wires became a reality. Lighting–first along streets, then inside buildings and finally in homespushed gas into the past. Baltimore’s trolleys were electrified, first in America, and soon homemakers were utilizing new appliances like vacuum cleaners and washing machines. Electrical power for machinery and factories modernized manufacturing, adding speed, reliability, and flexibility despite adding often-misunderstood dangers from this new power source. This is the story of how the city and her citizens adopted and adapted to the decades it took to truly electrify Baltimore.

Jack Burkert is a Baltimore native who in retirement has used his energy and interest in all things Baltimore to create a number of educational programs. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in history and education. His career was spent in various educator roles in the Baltimore City School system, the Pennsylvania State University, and with private employers in Washington and New York City. Later he ran his own consulting firm. Jack has made a specialty of programs about the history of Baltimore, its port, businesses, people and immigration.
