Speaker Series - Zoom Online Talk

City in Motion: Baltimore’s Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (and a few ships)

Sunday, April 18, from 2 to 4 pm

Presented by Jack Burkert

Baltimore, like virtually every other city, began as a center for exchange and trade. Trade: most often, the simple act of getting people and products from one point to another. That is what this program is about. Over the 300 years of its existence, like every other city, Baltimore had to re-invent itself as the demands of the times changed. A viable city and region must monitor societal changes, adjust to them as it changes the ways people and products are put in motion. Baltimore has consistently made those adjustments, from agrarian export center, to industrial giant to today’s logistics hub. Through the history we explore, Baltimore and its citizens hewed and sailed wooden, then steel, ships, built and operated a half dozen railroads, made and drove electric, steam and gasoline powered cars and trucks and from man’s first days of taking to the air, became a center for aircraft manufacture. This is the story of where we were and how we got to where we are; a history of a city in motion.

Jack Burkert is a Baltimore native, and has worked as a Museum Educator at the Baltimore Museum of Industry since 2010. He graduated from the University of Maryland and spent his 40+ career in various educator roles in the Baltimore City School system, at the Pennsylvania State University, through private employers and in his own consulting firm. Jack’s specialty is his research into the history of Baltimore, its port, businesses, people and immigration.
